About the Authors

Elaine A. Moore

Elaine A. Moore studied chemistry at Oxford University. She later completed a DPhil in theoretical chemistry under the supervision of Peter Atkins.

After working as a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Southampton for two years, she joined the Open University in 1975. She became a chemistry lecturer in 1977, a senior lecturer in 1998, and a reader in 2004. She retired in 2017 but continues to have an honorary position at the Open University.

Elaine has written teaching materials for Open University chemistry courses at levels 1, 2, and 3. She has also written materials for astronomy at level 2 and physics at level 3.

She is a coauthor of Metals and Life and Concepts in Transition Metal Chemistry. These books were used in a level 3 Open University inorganic chemistry course and were published jointly with the Royal Society of Chemistry.

Elaine was also the team leader for developing and delivering an Open University level 2 chemistry course that was taught entirely online.

She is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry and a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. She also served as co-chair for the department's successful submission for an Athena Swan bronze award.

Her research focuses mainly on theoretical chemistry and its application to solid-state materials. She has written or co-written more than 50 research papers published in scientific journals.

Her long-term research collaboration in this field led to an invitation to help organize postgraduate workshops on computational materials science at the University of Khartoum.

Lesley E. Smart

Lesley E. Smart studied chemistry at Southampton University in the United Kingdom. After completing her PhD in Raman spectroscopy, she became a lecturer at the then Royal University of Malta.

She later returned to the United Kingdom and received an SRC Fellowship to work on X-ray crystallography at Bristol University.

From 1977 to 2009, Lesley worked in the chemistry department at the Open University. During this time, she served as a lecturer, senior lecturer, and Molecular Science Programme director. She continued as an honorary senior lecturer until her death in 2016.

At the Open University, she helped develop undergraduate courses in inorganic chemistry, physical chemistry, and health sciences.

She was the coordinating editor and an author of The Molecular World, a collection of eight books and DVDs published jointly with the Royal Society of Chemistry. She wrote two of the books, The Third Dimension and Separation, Purification and Identification, both published in 2002.

Her later books included Alcohol and Human Health (2007) and Concepts in Transition Metal Chemistry (2010).

She was also featured in Mothers in Science: 64 Ways to Have It All, which is available for download from the Royal Society of Chemistry website.

Lesley served on the Council of the Royal Society of Chemistry and was chair of its Benevolent Fund.

Her research focused on the study and characterization of solid materials. She published research on single-crystal Raman spectroscopy, X-ray crystallography, Zintl phases, pigments, heterogeneous catalysis, and fuel cells.
